The visual arts in school

What would school be like without the opportunity to communicate and express happiness, anger, love, sadness, or fear while painting, drawing, printmaking and/or sculpting?  The visual arts give our kids a natural release of tension and ideal outlet to use their imagination and develop their creativity.

As a public school, Skyline is forced to choose between the performing arts or visual arts for funding by PPS.  Both forms of art are equally important.  Skyline PTA has been our school’s exclusive source of funding for visual arts programming for years through an event we call Move for the Arts.

What is Move for the Arts?

A picture says a thousand words.  Take a look!

This event brings together movement and art. It is a field day that usually takes place on a Friday in May that not only raises money for our art program but also gives kids time to work together to build relationships with their peers. Prior to the event, kids take home pledge forms and ask their families, friends, and neighbors to donate to next year’s visual arts program.

Last year, we raised about $6,000 by way of pledges.  Skyline PTA contributed an additional $3,000 in order to fund fully visual arts programming with Vibe of Portland for the 2019/20 school year.  Thanks to the generosity of families, community partners, and Skyline PTA, every student at Skyline had on average nine art experiences that connected to our IB unit in an open-ended, material-rich way.

How it works

In anticipation of the Move for the Arts field day, students work in their family groups (mixed grade groups) to complete various assignments, including deciding on a team name, creating a team poster, designing and making a team t-shirt, coming up with a team cheer, and more.

On the day of the event, kids participate in a variety of activities such as hula hooping, dancing, soccer, basketball, relay races, and kickball.

Only one family group earns the prestige of winning with the most points at the end of the day.  Various incentives are handed out throughout the event to those who exhibit IB traits.

Donations

This event is a fun event for kids, but it is also Skyline PTA’s way of funding art!  Each dollar donated goes directly into visual arts programming.  You can learn more on our Art page.

If each student at Skyline donated $50 per year, we would raise over $10,000 for visual arts programming.
