1st Day of School Eve

So if you’re anything like me, it’s 8:00pm the night before school and I have nothing done! Truth be told, I literally just deboarded a plane, trying to get kids in the shower, pull out the outfit I thought would be a good first day of school outfit from the top of some suitcase and scrambling to get school supplies packed and some sort of lunch together.

But it’s okay! It’ll all be okay! Kids will get to school (at somepoint), they’ll be mostly rested, they’ll get lunch even if I do start the year off with a PB&J (will you judge me??) So whatever is happening this evening, take a deep breath, enjoy the last moments with your kiddos and ship them off to our amazing fabulous staff tomorrow morning.

If you’re kids are NOT in bed yet (mine aren’t…yikes) sit down, read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn or your favorite back to school book and enjoy the last moments with your kiddos!

A few housekeeping items to share as well
(because that is inevitable!)

School Supply Kits (delays):
Attention Families that ordered from our school supply fundraiser:
We received part of our order but not all.
Backpacks, lunch boxes, copy paper, paper towels and some of the bulk items have not arrived yet. They should be here within the week. I am so sorry for the delay. If you need any further contact Shirley Baker.

Parking:
Parking on the first day of school can be a challenge! Please be mindful of children and buses. Parking tends to be limited so be patient. Also, the auction committee would like to remind you that the reserved parking spots in our lot should not be used by anyone other than those families with their names on the signs. These families have paid for the privilege to park in these spots at last year’s auction. Please be considerate when dropping off or picking up your children. Thank you!

Middle Schoolers:
Middle school students should report to the GYM tomorrow morning!

Bus Transportation Update:
Student Transportation has made changes to Routes 21, 27, 29 and 30 over the last few days in order to better serve students and families. If your student rides this route, please visit our website to ensure you have the correct stop time for your bus stop.

Thank you,
Student Transportation

Back to School Breakfast:
Join the PTA in the library for a breakfast after drop off tomorrow morning. It’s a great time to mix and mingle with new families and our returning veteran families. See you there!!!

The countdown begins…

We are just about 2 weeks away from the start of the school year! Are you ready? Are the kids ready? While I have enjoyed the summer, I’m also ready to get my kids back into some sort of routine. I think we’re driving each other BONKERS!

With the start of the school year comes so much information!!! I hope these emails find you well and relaxed as the sun is still shining. I like to share as much as I can with you before things get hectic, like they always do come September. A few things to have on your radar as we approach the start of the year.

Warmly,
Cosette Posko

Events:

Kinder/1st Grade and New Family Play date:

We love kicking off the school year mixing and mingling with our new families and especially our little kinders! Join us at the school playground for some play, snacks and conversation on Thursday, August 17th from 2:00-4:00pm. All families are welcome and we strongly encourage families with kindergartners and first graders to attend. Help welcome our new families and our newest additions to Skyline!

Envelope Stuffing:

If you have some time on Wednesday, August 23rd from 9:00-11:00am, we’re looking for folks to help with our envelope stuffing. We need a team that can work hard and fast to get all the paperwork stuffed to send home with kiddos on the first day of school. You can sign-up to bring along some breakfast goodies or come and help on our sign-up link. Thank you all in advance for helping!!

Community Care Day:

Our school-wide Community Care Day is set for Saturday, August 26th from 9:00am-12:00pm. Here are a few words from our Skyline Stewards Chair, Jinnet Powel:

I’ve been pretty casual about planning this year because our awesome community always comes though and it works out just fine. But recently, every year, turn-out has been a bit lower than the previous year. Let’s turn that around!

  • So grab your garden tools, gloves, shovels, rakes, water bottle and hat. Lather up on sunscreen. There will both light and heavy work – so something for everyone.
  • Come meet the new Principal (let’s not leave her hanging)
  • Connect with new families and retell your summer adventure stories. Besides, if we’re there it will mean we survived the Solar Eclipse!
  • Family friendly event, everyone is welcome!
  • Also looking for up to 2 people to bring gas powered weed-whips (edging weeds around building), up to 3 wheelbarrows (we’ve got 2 at the school), and a person to bring a tall, stable step-ladder for trimming the really tall shrubs. Contact Jinnet directly if you can help with any tools!

Back to School Breakfast:

Be sure to join us for our annual PTA Back to School Breakfast on Wednesday, August 30th. We’re still in need of goodies to help fill our tables. More details to follow about the first day of school schedule. Check out the sign-up to help!

Reminders:

New Family Guide:

Our New Family guide can be found on the webpage, it is filled with tons of important information to help ease your way into the new school year.

Mentors:

Looking for veteran families as mentors for our new families. If you are interested, please sign-up here. Thank you for considering guiding and connecting our new families with our amazing Skyline traditions!

Urgent Positions:

We’re still in need of the following positions urgently, please contact me if you are interested. Thank you!

PTA President Elect:
I’ll be honest, we’re in dire straits for a PTA President Elect. We’re looking for a dynamic individual that will shadow me this year and then take over as PTA President for the 2 following years. I will tell you from personal experience, it was SOOOO helpful to shadow the sitting President before taking over. It made the transition much easier. Please let me know if you have any interest, happy to chat over coffee, my treat!

Directory Spot (URGENT):
Looking for someone to work on our school directory. It would entail compiling and exporting it to our online directory source. The process will be much easier than years past and can mainly be done at home. This is an URGENT position as paperwork needs to be prepared prior to the start of school.

PTA Meeting Caregiver (College students/Grandparents?):
Attend monthly PTA meetings to cover childcare. We ideally would like 2 adults for this position. Could be a grandparent, college student, local community member, etc. We are able to gift a $25 gift card for service, usually in the form of a Fred Meyer gift card. Meetings start at 6pm and go until about 8-8:30 (end of Foundation meeting).
Dates for the 2017-2018 school year:
9/21, 10/19, 11/16, 1/18, 2/21, 3/15, 4/19, 5/17

Countdown to Auction

9055c86b-3998-40ac-87a7-67508d1a3977“Why, this car is auto-matic. It’s system-matic. Its hyyyyydro-matic. Why, it’s greased lightning!”

Auction is around the corner, just one week from Saturday. It’s time to get excited!!!! Here is a quick list of what to expect, questions answered and some party tips!

  • Why are we here?
    • Besides a good time? The auction is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year. Without your support, your contributions, your time and effort, your compassion, your help, your LOVE for our children ~ without YOU we couldn’t do what we do at Skyline! This event helps us raise funds to keep class sizes small, offer Spanish instruction to our primary grades, pay for field trips, support and supplies for our classroom teachers, pay for books and so much more! Anything you can do to help support OUR STUDENTS is valuable! And we also want to see your costumes!!!!!
  • Costume ~ yay or nay?
    • Costumes are definitely encouraged, it’s so much fun to see everyone get into the spirit. But surely aren’t required! You can show up in a 3-piece suit or jeans and a flannel and you’ll be JUST FINE! We just want to see you there having a good time!
  • What time does everything kick off?
    • The pre-party begins at 3:00 at the Skyline Grange. The auction begins at 5:30 at the school. Consider carpooling as parking is tight at both the Grange and school.
Please be advised, PPS informed us that security will be present during our event on-site at the school.
  • Is there a cost to attend the auction?
    • Nope, our auction does not have a fee to attend. Beer, wine and
hor d’oeuvres are offered at the Pre-Party for $10 per person. There is also food at the auction itself for $10 per person.
  • Do I have to purchase anything from the auction?
    • There is no requirement to buy anything or spend a minimum amount of money. We keep our auction budget friendly and there are many items that would appeal to any budget. Find some great deals during our silent auction, some individual class projects or desserts to snack on! Do what you can, every penny counts! It’s also a night for families to mix and mingle and get to know each other.
  • How do I know what is going to be there?
    • A very detailed catalog will be sent home with your oldest child on Monday, be sure to be on the lookout! I LOVE getting the catalog! Think of it like getting a new magazine in the mail. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, a highlighter or sticky notes and start marking all the fun things you’re interested in! You can always peruse the catalog online as well, but I can’t guarantee the fun since you can’t use sticky notes or a highlighter!
  • Are there pictures that I can check out from previous auctions?
  • HELP!

Most of all, please COME to the auction! It’s a great time and we are very excited to kick off another year in the books! For more auction details, check out the Auction Page!
