Summertime Updates

Hello Skyline Families and Staff,

First off, if you’re new to Skyline, welcome! And a big welcome to our new Principal BG Aguirre. If you haven’t already met Principal Aguirre, she comes to us with much experience, energy and a positive future for Skyline, welcome from PTA and Skyline Families.

INTRODUCTION

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Cosette Posko, I’m serving as your PTA President for the 2017-2018 school year. This will be my second and final year as your President. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year ahead and welcome new ideas, support and feedback. I have already met so many wonderful new families that are joining Skyline this year. I’m happy to help and support you as you journey your way into uncharted territory. I’ve created a page on our Skyline PTA webpage especially for NEW FAMILIES!! Consider it a guide and road map to kickoff the school year. I’ve loaded it with tons of information, especially information coming in as a new family to Skyline. Check out the rest of the webpage for information about our school as a whole including: Foundation, Auction, Art Program, Calendar, Committees, Volunteering information AND MORE! Many items will be updated as we near closer to the beginning of the year so keep checking back. There will always be a link at the bottom of my emails.

HIGHLIGHTS

There are a few things I’d like to highlight while the new school year is merely a distant thought in your mind. Perhaps you have time to ponder these ideas and also mark some on your calendar.

OPEN COMMITTEE CHAIR POSITIONS:

PTA President Elect:
I’ll be honest, we’re in dire straits for a PTA President Elect. We’re looking for a dynamic individual that will shadow me this year and then take over as PTA President for the 2 following years. I will tell you from personal experience, it was SOOOO helpful to shadow the sitting President before taking over. It made the transition much easier. Please let me know if you have any interest, happy to chat over coffee, my treat!

Directory Spot (URGENT):
Looking for someone to work on our school directory. It would entail compiling and exporting it to our online directory source. The process will be much easier than years past and can mainly be done at home. This is an URGENT position as paperwork needs to be prepared prior to the start of school.

PTA Meeting Caregiver (College students/Grandparents?):
Attend monthly PTA meetings to cover childcare. We ideally would like 2 adults for this position. Could be a grandparent, college student, local community member, etc. We are able to gift a $25 gift card for service, usually in the form of a Fred Meyer gift card. Meetings start at 6pm and go until about 8-8:30 (end of Foundation meeting).
Dates for the 2017-2018 school year:
9/21, 10/19, 11/16, 1/18, 2/21, 3/15, 4/19, 5/17

Family Night Out Coordinator:
Coordinate Family Night Out events throughout the year (ie: McMenamins, Meating Place, Rock Creek Corner, Pizzacato, etc.) Work with our Foundation board members.

Parent Education:
Work with families to find out needs and coordinate guest speakers or small group discussions on varies topics. Work with our Parent Support Group Chair.

Literacy Night** (new) :
Plan, coordinate and execute a family literacy night

STEM Night** (new) :
We’d like to launch our first STEM night this spring. Looking for someone to head up the family night and grow a team to support the event. **Possible Grant opportunity available! Our wonderful technology teacher Jet Griffith will aid on this committee and planning on applying for the grant below.

Scholastic Book Fair **seeking a shadow to take over the following year

Health & Safety Team ~ We already have quite a crew that are working on our health and safety pieces for the school including: Earthquake preparedness, Generator, Playground. I would like to continue expanding on this committee and officially have them work with PTA so we can get updates and have point contacts when issues arises. Please contact me if you are interested in joining this team.

ENVELOPE STUFFING:
(Save the date) ~ Wednesday, August 23rd 9:00am

Please join us and help get our back to school envelopes ready to send home with kiddos on the first day of school. We’ll be at the school on Wednesday, August 23rd at 9:00am. Sign-up coming SOON!!!

BACK TO SCHOOL BREAKFAST:
Wednesday, August 30th 9:00am

After you make your way through the crowded school hallways, stop by and have breakfast with other parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other caretakers. Relax, have a cup of coffee and some breakfast while getting to know some amazing Skyline families. Sign-up coming SOON for breakfast donation items.

Back to School Night ~ THURSDAY

So we had a minor set back a few weeks ago and Back to School night didn’t happen. That just means our teachers and kiddos had more time to make things even MORE amazing to share with us. Don’t miss out on a FABULOUS night, meeting teachers, staff members and touring the school. Don’t forget to visit the PTA table, our Auction Chairs will also be present answering all your burning questions about this year’s Auction!

Full details:

  • DateThursday, September 29th
  • Time: 6:00pm-7:30pm (we will all begin in the gym @ 6:00pm)
  • Who: All K-8 students and their families (younger siblings welcome!)
  • What: Students will take the lead to show family members their classroom and tour other areas and spaces at Skyline
  • Why: Parents and families are invited to meet their child’s teachers, learn about classroom/school routines, and see student activities/projects
  • How: Families will visit each of their students’ classrooms with their student to complete a “Skyline Passport”. Completed Passports will be reviewed at the end to receive a prize.
  • Hope: We hope every family will join us to learn more about Skyline, meet staff, see classrooms, activities, and examples of your student’s work!

Skyline PTA fundraiser
The Compak “Golden Bean” coffee roasters competition and conference just wrapped up in Portland and has donated specially roasted whole bean leftovers to Skyline. Many of you purchased bags of coffee last year, what a great deal!!!!

You can purchase a 6 – 8 oz “mystery roast” bag of premium whole bean coffee for $5 each. Limited supply available, bags will be sold
THIS THURSDAY at Back to School night!

Make your checks to Skyline PTA or have exact change in cash.

The coffee was roasted for this national competition and placed into bags with a random number assignment so we can’t predict the kind of roast or the company that roasted it. We can promise delicious premium coffee from roasters across the U.S. and a good benefit for Skyline. All proceeds go directly to the Skyline PTA.

The owners of Compak Golden Bean are friends of Kelley Weigel’s dad and step-mom, Rod and Jan Weigel, who own Fresh Cup coffee/tea trade magazine.

Skyline families,

I would like to facilitate a Parent Support Group. I envision it to be a confidential and safe place for Skyline parents to talk about challenges they might be facing, as well as an exchange of ideas and strategies. From mental health differences like autism and anxiety, social difficulties and discipline, parenting is tough, and no one should have to do it alone!
If you are interested, please let me know via Facebook Messenger, or through email at torys@comcast.net. In your message please let me know days of the week/times work best for you and if childcare would be a necessity for you to attend, along with any questions you may have about the group.

PTA Meeting

Thank you to all of those who were able to attend our first PTA meeting. It was a tough night with so many other school events going on but we had a great turnout!

Reality & Back to School

Step back for a second and pat yourself on the back:

  • You’ve managed to make it to week 3 and are still alive to read this
  • Kids are most likely EATING at lunch (at least whatever they can consume in 20 minutes)
  • For my new kinder parents, you’ve hopefully managed to sneak out of the classroom before 9:00am and your kid is having FUN!
  • You’ve met a new parent, family, teacher or child at the school
  • Now that it’s dark before 8:00, getting kids to be early is a piece of cake

Those are some big kudos, congratulations!!!

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT:

As you’re marveling in your awesomeness, just remember TOMORROW, Thursday, September 15th is Back to School night. Join teachers, staff and the PTA for Back to School night. Grab your passport and let your child(ren) guide you through the school. While you’re out and about, stop by and chat with a PTA board member and our amazing Auction Chairs to learn more about our 2017 Auction. I’ll be available to chat with and fill you in on the PTA and upcoming events. Liz Asher (auction chair) and Shirley Baker (auction co-chair) will be available to speak to and answer your auction questions, the auction is our BIGGEST event of the year.

CORNFEST:

Thank you for making Cornfest a success! It was wonderful to see so many new and old families there. The owl release made it so special as well, how wonderful for our little school. Special thanks to Brian Hoop, Kitty Nolen, Jinett Powell, Brandon Schmidt, Shannon Shinn and all the amazing volunteers! If you have receipts to submit for the event, be sure to grab a reimbursement form from the PTA mailbox in the office and attach your original receipts. We’ll get reimbursements taken care of after our first PTA meeting.

PTA Meeting:

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the first PTA meeting coming up next week, Thursday, September 22nd 6:00pm. Childcare is provided, please let Chris in the office know if you’ll be bringing your little ones. Pizza and fun is provided for the kids! Parents, guardians, teachers and community members are invited to join us to discuss our goals for 2017, snacks provided for adults as well. All our events and dates are listed on the PTA Calendar.

Volunteer Opportunities:

There are plenty of ways to help out at Skyline. Some of our upcoming events need YOUR HELP!

  • Sign-up to take over a late start breakfast for our teachers, the first one is NEXT week!
  • Picture Day is coming up on Tuesday, September 27th. We usually need 1-2 volunteers to help keep classes in line while getting pictures. Often times volunteers are compensated with discounted/free pictures. Email me if you’re interested.
  • Clothing center needs our help!
    Monday, Oct. 3rd is Skyline’s day to send 5-6 volunteers or more to be

    a “personal shopper” to help kids receive clothing or to help sort donations to get them put out. The volunteer hours are 9:30am – 1:30pm at Marshall HS Campus, 3905 SE 91st Avenue. The main cross streets are SE 92nd and SE Powell, out by the Chucky Cheese. We have been having about 40 – 50 kids each volunteer day and NEED volunteers.
    Volunteers will need to check in and check out at the Franklin HS Main Office.

Happy Monday (Ooops, I mean Tuesday)

Is anyone else confused that today is Tuesday rather than Monday?!? But, hey, that means it’s only a 4-day week!!! What better way to celebrate a short week than Cornfest!!

What is Cornfest?!?
For those of you who are new to Skyline or not new and have never attended, I’m here to tell you it’s one of my favorite Skyline events of the year! I was SUPER intimidated our first year because I had NO IDEA what the heck a Cornfest was! Alas, I attended and had a blast.

  • My kids ran around playing with friends
  • Soothing music was played by a local band
  • We all ate TONS of corn
  • Had a picnic in the field with the family
  • BONUS, I didn’t have to cook or do dishes! 

It was quite lovely and a perfect way to spend a Friday night! If you’re still contemplating…let me share the details of what’s to come this year!

2016 Cornfest:

  • All the corn you can eat, FREE
  • Harvest Share – too many plums, zucchinis or any other harvest goodies? Bring them along and share with the group
  • A picnic dinner of chicken, green salad, potato salad, pasta salad and roll – $6.00 for 13 yrs & up, $4.50 for 5-12 yrs, 4yrs & under are free (cash or check)
  • Music – Death by Thumbs with Skyline student Henry Earle

Friday, September 9th

The Cornfest is a Skyline tradition of food, friends and fun for families, teachers and staff to gather together as a new school year begins.

  • All the corn you can eat,FREE!

  • A picnic dinner of chicken, green salad, potato salad, pasta salad, and roll – $6.00 for 13 yrs & up, $4.50 for 5-12 yrs, 4yrs & under are free!  (check or cash)

  • Cornhole toss tournament – organized by parent Brandon Schmidt.

  • Owl release – Audubon Society will release several owls into the wild.

  • Bench dedication to Kyron Horman – A new bench designed by former Skyline parent artist Ivan Mclean will be dedicated in Kyron’s memory.

  • Music – Death by Thumbs with Skyline student Henry Earle.

  • Skyline Gear – PTA will have t-shirts and sweatshirts available for sale. We will also be taking orders. Adult & children sizes available. (check or cash)

Volunteers Needed

To make Cornfest a success we need dozens of Skyline parents and middle school students to volunteer. This is a great way to meet other parents and get involved.

All it takes is signing up for a 30 minute shift. Ideally help out for two 30 minute shifts or more. Help needed with set-up and clean-up, food servers and runners, kitchen help, corn roasters, cashiers, and more.

Day of event tasks we need help with:

  • Set-up (3 – 5 PM): set-up tables, food line, signage, decorations.

  • Cashiers:  Take payments for dinner, make change.

  • Food Runners: Bring food up from kitchen when needed.

  • Food Servers: Serve up dinner portions.

  • Corn Roasters: Roast and serve corn.

  • Green Team Kitchen Help: Run re-useable dishes through dishwasher.

  • Clean Up (start 7:30ish): Put food away, take down tables, litter patrol.

  • Arts and Crafts: Assist kids with arts and craft activities.

Advance coordination help needed too: Opportunity for newer Skyline parents to take on a leadership role helping with advance coordination and set-up.

  • Advance food and supply run coordination: Coordination of food ordering, advance pick-up at grocery and day of pickup for hot food.

  • Green Team coordination: Advance coordination and set-up for recycling stations, helping ensure reusable trays are ready, delivery of compost to farm.

  • Arts and crafts table coordination: Advance coordination for arts and crafts table for student activities during event.

  • Audio support for band: Advance help with band with audio set-up, mainly electrical cord connection, troubleshooting issues throughout night.

The Excitement is Dwindling

So you made it through 2 full days back at school. Have you experienced kids melting down yet? All this brain work is EXHAUSTING! One of my little ones had a HUGE meltdown this evening over not wanting to take a shower, so we told her to go get ready for bed…and clearly that was also the wrong answer, meltdown continued! Emotions are high! Take a few deep breaths and know that it will get better.

Besides getting into a new routine, packing lunches, trying not to miss the bus, schlepping them to soccer, not forgetting to pick them up AND managing to work…did you check out that GIANT PACKET of goodies? I know, that sounds like a daunting task but I promise you it will be worth it! You will either read through it and feel so informed or have 6 million questions! Guess what, if you have questions, I’m here to help you. I’m hoping this page will be a huge resource for you.

  • Upcoming events: We have several sign-ups in place, we’re looking for some volunteers for Cornfest, Late Start Breakfasts and Clothing Closet.
  • For those of you that are new to Skyline, please be sure to come to Cornfest next Friday, September 9th at 5:30. Dinner for purchase, all the corn you can eat, local band talent and lot of fun! It’s a perfect way to mix and mingle. Bring your picnic blanket and enjoy!

Happy 1st Day of School EVE

Tomorrow is the big day and our kids are headed back to school! Are you ready? New backpacks, new shoes, lunches packed and ready to go!

One thing is certain, our teachers at Skyline are the BEST! They have been working tirelessly getting everything just right for our kids. The best thing about teaching is getting a fresh start each year. Even if you’re child is headed back to the same teacher, many times things will be so different.

I welcome our parents that have been with Skyline for years and our new families to join us after drop off for a breakfast in the library. It’s a wonderful time to meet new families and reconnect with old friends. We still have a few open spots for breakfast goodies, if you’re able to help out sign-up today.
