Volunteer opportunities

We have about 15 Nike employees who have volunteered to participate but we could a few extra helpers during the event and on Thursday, May 10. There will be some assistance needed with event set up and tear down. In addition, there will be a food sign up for the volunteer lunch. Please sign up to help if you are able!

Art in the School

What would school be like without Visual Arts? Without a place to express happiness, anger, love, sadness or peace? Visual Arts does that for so many kids (and adults). A natural release of tension when you pickup a paint brush or your hands touch and mold clay into a piece of art.

As a public school, unfortunately we are forced to choose between Music Arts or Visual Arts for funding. BOTH forms of art are equally important and our children should not have to sacrifice losing one. Our Skyline PTA has been our source of funding for Visual Arts program for years through our own fundraising and student event called Move for the Arts.

This event brings together movement and art. An event that not only raises money for our art program but also gives kids a time to work together to build relationships with their peers.

Last year, this fundraiser raised enough to pay for 100% of our classroom art program. As a feeder school for Lincoln High School, our arts tax funds go to the performing arts. Thanks to the generosity of families, community partners and Move for the Arts, this year, every student will have an average of 9 art experiences that are fun and engaging and connect to the IB unit in an open-ended, material rich way. Let’s do it again for next year! Meeting our goal funds art, provides a budget for Move for the Arts 2019 and would also fund community art projects for Skyline.

How it Works

All students, K-8 work together in heterogeneous groups months before the event to create, design and imagine their team name and use IB strategies to work together.

On the day of the event kids start by choosing from a variety of activities:

  • Hula hooping
  • Basketball
  • Dancing
  • Running
  • And more…

Cohort groups come together to compete in relay races! The teams must work together building on their IB skills to conquer the relay races. Each team is constantly working with each to earn points for their cohort.

Only one cohort team earns the  prestige of winning with the most points at the end of the day.

 

Donations

This event is a fun event for kids, but it’s also our way of funding art! Each dollar donated goes directly into the Art Program run by our amazing teachers, you can learn more about them on our Art page.

Each child is sent home with a donation form, we have hopes that each child can raise at least $50 in donations, that’s 10 people giving $5!!! That’s a cup of coffee at Starbucks, lunch out of the office (or half a lunch), that extra $5 you shouldn’t have spent at Target (or $50!!).

With 300 kids, $50 each we could raise over $10,000 to fund our program! That supplies our artists and supplies for the year!!!

Not only will your donation go DIRECTLY toward our art program (no middleman) but kids will also earn AMAZING prizes for their hard fundraising efforts:

We’ve received some wonderful community donations as prizes for Move for the Arts fundraising. Donations should be submitted by May 7 for prize consideration.

Top student fundraiser – Art supplies in a wooden case, pass to Nike Company Store and $50 Nike gift card
2nd place – Gift basket of art supplies and certificate for pair of Keen shoes
3rd place – Wooden tabletop easel and certificate for pair of Keen shoes
4th place – Certificate for pair of Keen shoes
Students who raise $50 in donations will get an awesome Skyline sticker.
